It's Been Awhile!

Several months have passsed since I updated this blog! Life moves along and as things change, I am the type of person that puts things on hold while I am adjusting my life to newness. I then tend to add them back one by one. I am working a new job now in a corporate setting. That has been an adjustment but things are going well.

As Christmas is approaching, I am so thankful for my life. My awesome husband has been my biggest supporter as I adjust to new schedules and priorities. He has picked up slack where most men would just let things go. We have grown even closer these last few months.

Book Review: Max on Life

This book was a joy to review. It covered such a wide range of topics. The advice and inspiration it offered was practical and easy to understand. I felt like he was sitting down with a small group discussing the topics covered. He didn't shy away from the hard questions but his delivery makes you receptive to the truth presented. Great material!

Book Review: The Final Summit

This was not my favorite book to review. I had a hard time getting into it and kept thinking I was missing some background of the story. My biggest disappointment was that it seemed to imply mankind could save itself. Because I personally believe Jesus Christ is the only thing that stops mankind from total destruction, I couldn't really delve into it wholeheartedly and it left me feeling like something important had been missed.

Book Review; Reggie

Growing up in the Assemblies of God in Tennessee, I knew the young Reggie Dabbs. I remember him and his horn during youth conventions at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. I also went on an AIMS missions trip when I was 16 that he also went on.

What I remember about him was his big sense of humor and the way he could play that horn! It is awesome to see what God has done in his life and to read his personal testimony. It reminded me we never know what journey someone has had to walk until we take the time to get to know them and their story.

Reggie's story is truly an inspiration to teenagers everywhere. His ministry in highs schools reflect his love for Christ and the youth of today. I would recommend this book.

Book Review: We Shall See God

This book starts with a biography of Charles Spurgeon. His life and work caused him to be called "the prince of preachers". This book is a collection of sermons Spurgeon wrote about heaven. the sermons are kept brief and some words have been changed to make for easier reading for the modern time. Randy Alcorn concludes each message with his own words pertaining to the sermon just given.

It is designed to be used as a 50 day devotional read but I took it on vacation with me and read it in the car! My family was with me and I enjoyed reading parts out loud to them. I appreciate the fact that the book is totally Biblically based and real 'meat' instead of filled with fluff!

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Gal 2:20)

Am I living the crucified life?

My human tendency is to live in myself... my own strength, my own desires, my own way.

We have to ask ourselves why we are feeling the way we are. For me that may mean grumpy, tired, depressed or just sad.

Life isn't always easy or simple.
Sometimes situations others we care about are dealing with affect us. This can cause us to withdraw from those around us. We can't change the choices other people make. We can offer them advice and pray for them but ultimately we have to surrender them to Christ. With that surrender we sometimes grieve over their choices but the release is necessary so that we can walk in Christ ourselves.

I want Christ to live in me and through me.... that means I don't hold on to my own emotions but remember who God is and that He loves me so much He gave Himself for me... How awesome is that! My faith in Him is what I live by. Living that life means I surrender my right to live in and of myself... No withdrawing or withholding His love from others but because it is Him in me I do what he wants and He is responsible for the results!

Book Review: My Foolish Heart

The war in the Middle East, drunk driving, agoraphobia.. These are some of the issues this book of fiction tries to tackle. I have read through the first 6 chapters and life has made it hard for me to 'get into' the story. Although I don't find myself disliking the main character, I haven't really connected with her or anyone else in the story.

As a regular book blogger, I would love to hear your own experience if you have read this book. I received this book free from Tyndale Publishing House in return for providing an honest review.

Tornadoes and other thoughts!

I know it has been too long since I have posted.. things have been crazy around here!

We have had our share of storms this spring but the 19th of April brought in our worst yet. We had two tornadoes and lots of straightline winds in our little town. Sine I work for State Farm, work has been absolutely hectic since then! We have filed over 150 claims in our office.

This was also our Chinese 'son' Liming's first experience with a tornado. According to him, they have earthquakes but not tornadoes. My family all went to the basement during the worst of it. Li was so funny, he was shining his cell phone at us like we were at a concert singing "We are the world."! We made it all out safe and sound with no damage to our home at all.

The church did receive damage on the roof and outside but the insurance is putting on a complete new roof -Praise God for insurance! Speaking of blessings, not one person was hurt from the storms in our area. We know that was a blessing to name. Our prayers are with those who have lost loved ones in all of the weather this spring has brought across our land!

Letting God Establish You

TO ESTABLISH=To place or settle in a secure position or condition; install

I can look back over the places we have been in ministry and pinpoint in each place the situation or time that we were established. Trust me, that doesn't usually happen in the 'installation service". Sometimes, it is through a successful building program, other times it is through the illness, death and funeral of a beloved church member.... and sometimes it is through our enemies.

If you can't handle knowing that there are people out there that actually hate you and all that you stand for DO NOT go into the ministry! All of us want to be liked but if you know that having someone consider you their enemy will devastate you emotionally and spiritually, look out!

Recently, my husband and I went through a hard thing in our present ministry. There was absolutely nothing we could do about it but take it to the Lord and offer it up to Him. As we both sought the Lord on this situation, God clearly spoke this: God will use even our enemies to establish us.

Do we know God led us here? absolutely, without a doubt.

Do we know God has a plan for us here and is NOT done with us here, in this place? abolutely!

Therefore, He will continue to establish us. We may wish it would happen in a different way but that is our own human pride and thinking. It is up to HIM to establish us HIS way. Even if that means through our enemies.

Here are some verses God has given me to encourage me to be stable and let Him fight each battle:

2 Thessalonians 2:16,17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

Psalm 90:17 NIV May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands.

Romans 16:25 NIV Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past,

Letting God establish us means not jumping to our own (or each other's) defense but resting in the truth and knowing this is a part of His plan. It means making sure our hearts are pure before God and that we do NOT allow ourselves to harbor unforgiveness or resentment towards others but that we walk in love; knowing God may someday have those who do not want to walk in harmony with us right now walk in the doors of our home or church and being ok with that.

I am excited about what God is doing right now and the establishment of the work of our hands! Amen!

31 Days of Power

Sometimes, as Christians, we need a refresher course in spiritual warfare. Just that back to the basics reminder of who we are in Christ and who our actual foe is.

Ruth Myers has a new book called 31 Days of Power- Learning to live in spiritual victory. The book begins with a brief introduction reminding us we are in a spirital war. How do we actually live each day in the dynamic triumph God offers us through Jesus Christ? The goal of this book is to help us live in God's presence through prayer and praise, as well as the realization of who we are in Christ and the victory that has already been provided through Jesus.

Each day is filled with prayers and praise based on scriptures. Each prayer is referenced with scriptures used. I personally read the prayers aloud so that they were being spoken as I read. The second half of the book is 5 brief chapters on the basic dynamics of spiritual warfare. I recommend this book as a great gift for a discouraged friend or a basic refresher for yourself.

Have fun with a girlfriend via Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes!

What kind of book do you need at 3 am when you can't sleep? What book have you read lately you can recommend to all your girlfriends? Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes by Robin Jones Gunn fulfilled both of those needs last week... I absolutely devoured the book in 3 hours! It made me laugh and it made me cry, then it made me laugh all over again.

I could definitely relate to the main character of the book, Summer. Her entire life she has 'played it safe'. The story is about how God stretches her in order to deal with an area of her life she needs to surrender to Him.. I won't ruin the story by telling you more about her spiritual journey. The journey itself takes place when she visits her lifelong penpal, Noelle, in Holland.

Noelle is on a life journey as well (aren't we all?). The book draws us into her life and spirit, as she allows Gos to begin a new work in her as well.

I have told several ladies to read this book! I especially enjoyed the comraderie I felt with Christian women. It made me want to hug the neck of a fellow sisterchick!

Book Review: The story of the Bible by Larry Stone

The very best thing about reviewing books for companies is receiving books for free. You never know what you are going to get.... Sometimes the copies are early editions with weird texture pages. Sometimes they are damaged paperbacks or hardbacks..... and sometimes they are beautiful! (Can you tell I love books?)

This book was the biggest WOW I have had since beginning my hobby of book reviewer. This beautiful, 96 page, oversized hardback book gives a broad, if not deep, overview of the history of the Bible.

The first part of the book is a history of ancient manuscripts and offers explanation as to why the authenticity of scriptures can be trusted. The Bible is an amazing book.... It was written in three languages by more than 40 authors over a period of fifteen hundred years! The author does a superior job of explaining all of this to the reader.

Next, the book covers the early church., including descriptions of several important persons and events in chronological order as well as exploring the impact scriptures had from early Christendom on to the 20th Century. Biographies of men like Martin Luther and Johannes Gutenberg are important pieces to connect us to our spiritual heritage.

A fabulous component of this book that make it extra-ordinary are the 23 pull-out pages of ancient manuscripts that are stored in pockets throughout the book, in the appropriate places. These loose pages can be physically and completely removed from the book for use in various ways and then stored back in their original places.

I currently have three teenage boys living in my house. I plan to leave this book on my coffee table and I am confident it will be used!

Book Review:Scars of a Chef

This book is the first one I have reviewed for Tyndale House Publishing. They sent me a free copy to review on this blog. The book was a nice hardcopy that would be great for gift giving. I can see someone buying one of his cookbooks and this autobiography as a great gift for a foodie in their life!

The book captured my attention and kept it throughout my read. I had a hard time putting it down! I found the backstage look at his climb up the restaurant kitchen intriquing... He actually started out working at one of the first Wendy's! He was a dyslexic high school drop out who literally worked his way through the kitchens in American restaurants to become a successful chef.

I think anyone would enjoy reading about his personal, business and spiritual journey.

Tools to Study the Bible

How do I study the Bible? This is a question alot of people may ask themselves but never stop to figure the answer out. For many people, reading the Bible from front to back is as deep as they ever go. Other people may only open their Bible in church or Bible study group.

To grow deeper in Christ requires Bible study. This journey into the Book we, as Christians, base our very lives upon can be made easier if we have the right tools. What are these tools?

A good study Bible-A good Pentecostal Bible that recently came out is Life in the Spirit Study Bible. It contains over eighty articles on key topics of Bible doctrine and teaching.

Whichever study Bible you choose keep some things in mind:
1- a study Bible has an introduction for each book of the Bible. This contains information about the author, original readers, outline, survey, background, theme, and other special features.
2.a study Bible contains comments on key verses that you should read to help you understand their meaning.

Translations-comparing different translations is a great way to delve deeper into the Bible. Remember that the original Bible was written mostly in Greek and Hebrew. The translations themselves are not inspired but are very good tools to compare in order to apply Scriptures to your life.

Concordances-A concordance lists all the words of the Bible alphabetically. Each entry gives Scripture reference for where the word can be found in the Bible. This study guide is helpful when you want to find different places a certain word is used.

Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias-dictionaries and encyclopedias are written to help us understand a word better. They also explain the different ways a word was used in Biblical times.

Commentaries-this study tool gives the author's opinion on each verse in a Biblical book. When choosing a commentary, it is important to know the author's individual doctrine since they can vary greatly in their handling of things like the babtism of the Holy Spirit, predestination, and eternal security.

This is just a brief overview of the tools available to aid you in your study of the Bible. I based it upon my own study of Introduction to Hermeneutics: How to Interpret the Bible.

Wake Up and Change Your World!

What do we have in common with Muslim women? What does sex slavery in India have to do with me and MY life?

The overall theme of this new release by Lisa Bevere is empowering women. The book seeks to do several things. One of these is to remind us of the bondages and lack of freedom women are suffering around the world. She encourages us to speak up for children around the world, acquire night vision to rescue those caught in the grip of darkness, to nurture other women, and to advocate for the voiceless.

One of my favorite take-aways from the book was asking myself "What do I need to do NOW, where I am, to be a world-changer?" "What personal development do I need to pursue to fulfill that call upon my life?" We can all waste so much time waiting for the right circumstance but it is ultimately up to us to decide to step up and out for Christ!

Struggling to Love

Do you ever find yourself struggling to love? I am not a very outgoing person sometimes. Learning about our weaknesses helps us learn to overcome them. One of my big ones is that I withdraw when I think people are unhappy with me or if I KNOW they are talking about me.

I am sure it has to do with trying to protect myself, but the point is I know it is something I deal with. For me, forgiveness and working through something starts deep within me. I have to acknowledge what I am upset about and work through those feelings inwardly. Outwardly, I usually wait until the opportunity to be myself and show I have no ill feelings to come naturally instead of 'creating' the opportunity.

I recently found out that sometimes that is taken as holding on to bad feelings. Well duh, you may be thinking... I honestly was shocked to discover that! I had no idea. I KNOW I have no bad feelings about situations and have gotten over the conflict but it wasn't coming through to the other person.

Good lesson for me to learn! So now I am struggling not just to love but to SHOW that love to others quicker than I instinctively would. Yes, it is hard to live in a 'fishbowl' as a pastor's wife and to have everything you say and don't say judged but I am learning.. Most of all I am learning God is still stretching me!

Be Thou Exalted

O God, be Thou exalted over my possessions. Nothing of earth’s treasures shall seem dear to me if only Thou art glorified in my life.

Be Thou exalted over my friendships. I am determined that Thou shall be above all, though I must stand deserted and alone in the midst of the earth.

Be Thou exalted above my comforts. Though it may mean the loss of bodily comforts and the carrying of heavy crosses I shall keep my vow made this day before Thee.

Be Thou exalted over my reputation. Make me ambitious to please Thee even if as a result I must sink into obscurity and my name be forgotten as a dream.

Rise, O Lord, into Thy proper place of honor, above my ambitions, above my likes and dislikes, above my family, above my health and even my life itself.

Let me decrease that Thou mayest increase, let me sink that Thou mayest rise above.

Are you pursuing the blessings of God or are they pursuing you?

Are you pursuing the blessings of God? Do you ever look at other people's lives and see what great things are happening and wonder why you aren't seeing those things in your own life or ministry?

While in prayer this morning, it suddenly hit me afresh that the blessings and favor of God pursued David.

Think about it. David was with his sheep, tending them in the lonely wildernes as his father had ordered him to do. In the meantime, his brothers were enjoying the comforts of home and a great meal prepared for their visitor. They then got in line to get the blessing they undoubtably thought Samuel was handing out.

But the Holy Spirit had someone else in mind... the obedient and faithful son that was not considered important enough to send for. David did not have to pursue the blessing of God, it pursued him! Why? because of his faithfulness and because he kept his heart pure before God. He spent time in worship with Jehovah, in spite of knowing he was in the lowliness of positions. Instead of groaning about his circumstances and vying for recognition, he did what he knew to do with all of his heart.

This is NOT the end of the story because David went back to the sheep after he was anointed by Samuel and waited for the promotion to come. How many times have we seen potential Davids get a word from God and jump out of position prematurely? We start thinking we belong on the throne NOW instead of allowing God to promote us HIS way! Just as David made sure to keep his humility, we have to do the same.

Being obedient where we are on the way to where we are going! It is estimated that David was 25 when he was anointed by Samuel and 30 when he actually became the king... that is 5 yrs he spent serving in whatever job was before him! In his life, time after time, we find the anointing and favor of God finding him through his heart of humility and obedience.

God knows where you are. He has you here for a reason. Keep your heart pure before Him and He will promote you in HIS time and in HIS way.

January=Facebook Fast

One of my standards in my life has always been that I did not want anything in my life that I could not do without. Throughout the years, I have tried this out at various times with things like television, caffeine and even sugar. I try to teach that to my children also. I have compassion to those who are addicted to nicotine, alcohol, even food. I think it is so much easier if we stay away from the things that have the capability to control us daily.

Facebook is one of those things that can be a blessing or a curse. I recently found myself way too concerned about facebook. I admit, it was affecting my emotions. Behavior that we would not find acceptable in face to face interactions seems to be common on facebook. Seeing parents bash their children or children their parents, watching people I know are critical of others 'suck up to' them online, Christian couples lusting over movie stars and airing their marriage woes, as well as general negativity were just pulling me down.

I love the people on my 'page' that daily post scriptures, news and encouragements to others but found that I needed a break.... desperately. So I went on a facebook fast for the month. What is absolutely awesome about it was that when I shared it with my Sunday school class one of the gals in there had just deleted her facebook last month while God had been dealing with three others in the area of facebook.

It sure helps to have support! I am just blown away but what God is doing during this time; not only in my life but also in theirs. He is breaking bondages and mindsets that were so set it can only be Him. Our church is experiencing a break thru and I find myself not carried away and worried about the people I cannot control anyway!

I don't know what the end result will be of this month (I will get back to you on that). But I do know that God is good and this is a good thing!

A New Season

A season of hope.
A time for new beginnings.

This is the time to let go of the past
with all of it's failures, as well as what you thought were it's successes.
It is time to move forward.
Reach toward all that I have for you.

Seek me with all of your heart.
Keep your heart pure before me and your hands clean.
Do not allow the corruption of the world to discolor your heart.

Set your fce like a flint.
Take care of the things in your life you have been neglecting.
Do the things you need to do to be in position.
The position that I have placed you in.

Do not borrow trouble from tomorrow OR from yesterday.
Listen only for my voice and seek only after me.
For this season is the time to move forward.

Is that a threat or a promise?

Being the mom of 2 teenage boys, we have had our share of sarcasm and humor. One of the corny things I am sure we all have heard is when someone says something they are going to do and the other guy asks "Is that a threat?" The answer, according to their humor is "No, that's a promise!"

I was reminded of that today when a friend, knowing I am going through a trying time with some unethical individuals, sent me the following verse: The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. Proverbs 13:9

To those of us who live our lives for Christ, that verse offers us the assurance that our light is shining,,, even when we can't see it ourselves.... even when we don't realize our perserverence is a testimony to those around us who are watching our lives.

But consider, for a moment, those who are being warned in that verse. The lamp will be snuffed out. No, it is not our job. Realistically, we should not even pray for the downfall of our enemies. When we truly surrender our lives to Christ, we hurt for them. The threat is NOT from us but from the consequences of their wicked deeds. Yes, sometimes the lamp shines and looks like our light. It may even fool some people into believing it is a light. But thankfully, we are not God! Our job is just to make sure we stay righteous before God!

Book Review: Unto the Hills Daily Devotional by Billy Graham

One of my best friends lives on a big dairy farm in Missouri. She has a beautifully restored farmhouse. One of my favorite rooms is the kitchen/dining room. She has a big kitchen table and in the very center she has a daily devotional book. Every morning, they have devotions and the book is ALWAYS open to the right day. Now it helps that she cooks 3 full meals a day; complete with pies and cookies. But I absolutely love the feeling I get when I am at her house.

When I had the opportunity to review a daily devotional by Billy Graham, I hurrayed! According to the research I did, this book has just come back in print after several years when it was unavailable.

Each of the 365 daily readings include a passage of scripture, an encouragement from Billy Graham himself, and a prayer made especially for the book. The readings are not too short, yet short enough to be read daily. The language used is clear and direct. I think this book makes a wonderful gift for someone in your life who is starting out on their Christan walk or someone struggling to discipline themselves in daily devotions.

Body for Life:Fitness Update: Challenge 1 completed

I had previously written that my husband and I had starting working out together. Just wanted to give an update for those of you that had asked: We completed our 12 week challenge and the results are that we each lost 12 lbs.

In the bigger picture, my clothes are loose and I feel great! I am so proud of my husband too. He went from a 36 waist to a 32! We haven't seen that size for many years :) He is looking and feeling so good! Being a pastor can be a stressful job and working out and staying in shape are definitely important!

Right now, we are taking a break for the holidays but we plan to start strong again in January. We are both excited about it and determined to stay healthy in 2011.

Dreams stop at the word IMPOSSIBLE!

I am married to a dreamer. I LOVE being married to a dreamer... most of the time!

Occasionally, over the past 20 yrs, I have been guilty of occasionally being a dream squasher! Until I learned how it affects a dreamer. It absolutely deflates them but more importantly, it can hinder what God is wanting to do. Not only is my husband a dreamer, He is a man of faith and action!

God really does specialize in things man thinks are impossible!

Matthew 19:26 says, "Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'
So if you are a dreamer be careful who you share your dreams with... and if you are married to a dreamer make sure you don't hinder what God is wanting to accomplish! Not only that, do yourself and your marriage a favor and commit to the dream. Your marriage and ministry will absolutely never be the same.

Book Review:Then Sings My Soul

I grew up singing Christian hymns and think they are absolutely beautiful. One of my interests is Christian History, so when the opportunity came to review this book, I was really excited. I was not disappointed. Then Sings My Soul is a collection of 150 Christmas, Easter and favorite Hymn stories.

The book is organized by occasions, starting with Christmas hymns. One one page is the hymn, while the facing page has a brief story about the hymn. Hymns tell a story. We connect to them because the faith that we have is shared by the writer. He or she expresses for us the tribulations, struggles, triumphs and hope that we feel as we journey through this walk of faith.

We relate to their personal stories because we relate to the hymn. That is why I NEED to know their stories. The hymn comes to life for me when I think about the people behind their words. When I struggle to stay out of the 'mullygrubs' I think of Fanny Crosy, the blind hymnist who lost her only child as an infant. She wrote Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story. This is my song. Praising my savior all the day long.

I could go on and on with my favorite stories but I suggest you buy the book or do some research for yourself on your favorite hymn. You may find new encouragement and zeal for the walk you are on. So keep your head high sister! We will make it!

Christ Plus Nothing Equals Everything - Martin Luther

We had our Women's Ministries meeting last night. One of the Thanksgiving games we played involved listing everything we are thankful for and comparing our answers to see which ones were unique. I was truly in awe of some of the things mentioned. Things like a healthy body and a sound mind were mentioned, but our ladies went much deeper.

They went into the attributes of God. Things like grace and God the Father's unfailing love. Answered prayers and the Holy Spirit. Mercy and peace. These are the things that can't be taken away. When our health fails us and we struggle to understand life's issues, there is the knowledge that Christ is enough. That is what holds us when we feel like giving up. That is what puts a song in our heart in the middle of dark night.

Christ loves us. That is everything!

Let's go love on some kids!

My hubby and I have inherited coordination of the Girls and Boys Wednesday night ministry (formerly known as Missionettes and Royal Rangers) at our current church. Neither one of us honestly needed another thing to add to our plates but that is another story!

I now start my Wednesday morning by saying outloud "Tonight we get to go love on some kids!" Believe me, these are kids that desperately need to be loved! Some of them come from home situations we cannot imagine. After working 8-5, I know not to sit down and get comfortable! We are at church by 6-6:15 and the vans start bringing in the masses!

This week we had 83. I get the girls classes together in the fellowship hall and we go over the pledges to the flags and our theme songs. Last week, I heard one of our teachers telling her girls as they were leaving "I love you! See you next week!" It absolutely blessed my heart and I thought "This is why we do what we do." We are blessed to have some adults and youth that absolutely spend that time sharing the love of Jesus. There is nothing like the rush of realizing that you are absolutely following the example and commands of Jesus. Children and the lost are His heartbeat.

Feeling down and depressed? Have your thoughts and moods turned inward? On a pity party? Determined to be stubborn about those past hang-ups and offenses you won't forgive? Lay it ALL down and decide to look outward instead. Let's all go love on some kids!

Why are we Here? Why do we do what we do? What has God called us here to do?

Why are we here? We are here because God led us here. God opened the door and clearly showed us that we were to walk through it.

Why do we keep doing what we are Doing? We keep doing what we are doing because God called us HERE. Sure, we did not know when we accepted the call here the problems we would face. On the surface, everything looked good. But when you peeled back the layers, there were absesses and lack of solid foundation that were revealed. We still believe in who we are in God and that sanity and a healthy church body are worth fighting for.

We do what we do because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes it is not easy and often it does not turn out for your own personal favor but we have to do what we know is right in the long run. This means being willing to take the short-term criticism.

What has God called us here to do? To win souls and disciple believers. I believe in this church. I believe we have a calling to win souls. There are lives that need to be changed and homes that desperately need to be restored. Bondages must be broken. The body of Christ needs to arise from its stupor; clean itself up and robe itself as a Bride.... "a glorious church without spot or wrinkle."

We need to get serious about deliverance and restoration taking place. Serious enough to set aside our own preferences, attitudes and issues. Serious enough to seek God and to allow Him to remove all hinderances, from our lives and from our church.... to get on our faces before Him and entreat Him for a genuine breakthrough.

Captured By Grace: Book Review

David Jeremiah wrote this book about God's grace by sharing the life of 2 men; John Newton (who wrote the famous hymn,Amazing Grace) and Saul/Paul. He uses comparisons fromt he lives of these 2 men to talk about the awesome grace of God. The book also shares stories of other characters from the Bible, including the Prodigal Son. Jeremiah is a well-known Bible teacher/preacher. His warm style comes through the pages as he breaks down concepts like justification, faith and endurance.

I admit, I had a harder time actually getting into this book than any other I have ever reviewed on this site. I think it is because my learning style did not really connect with his writing style. I also wished he had actually told more of the story of John Newton.

My interest in reading the book stems from an old hobby of mine; researching the life of well-known and not so well-known hymnists. I find it fascinating to learn about the lives of the men and women whose songs we sing each Sunday. The book piqued my interest but didn't really keep it.

Up a creek without a paddle!

You know that moment of panic.... things seem to be out of your control. You don't know what you're going to do and it looks like you are in an impossible situation. You have the feeling of being up a creek without a paddle!

Stop. Just for a minute. Please ask yourself the following questions:

Have you ever been in a creek?

How deep is a creek?

Do you actually NEED a paddle in the creek for the boat that you SOMEHOW got in there?

I love it when we get to laugh at ourselves. I did that today. My husband and I were discussing an issue we are currently facing. I said to him "We have been through things SO much tougher than this and made it through victorious."

We have been in the white water rapids, we have been in the lakes, we have been in the desert. We can make it through this creek... even without a paddle!

Offense

"Offense can't be given, it has to be taken."

Heard that quote recently. It took me a few minutes to digest it. Actually I am still digesting it!

How about you? When is the last time you have 'taken offense' at something or someone.

Did you stop to think you were choosing to be offended?

I know that when I have been offended it usually happens when I am exhausted, stressed or frustrated at several different things. There will always be people who do not like you! There will always be people who are not on your team and there will always be people who are just downright mean! The best response is to realize that it is NOT personal; even though it feels very personal at the time. They are unhappy and you are right there.! Your best defense is your testimony! This is when it is important to realize the truth outlives a lie.

Another quote I like is "He who angers you controls you."

Who wants someone who hates you and thinks ill of you to have that much power over you?

I love it when God shows us so many deep things. It is hard and usually comes through trials and hard things in our life but isn't it awesome to know we have a Father that loves us that much? He wants us to be in that place where we look to Him daily for what we need. Realistically for most of us, that happens when we go through trials and tough times.

So let go of the offense and allow God to help you rise above it.

Don't you love it when God reminds us we are a work in progress? Sometimes it seems like life is just moving along and we think everything is going smooth. We may even think we have 'arrived' and have this Christian life all figured out. Then WHAM!!! something unexpected happens!

Someone or something absolutely pulls the rug out from under us and we realize we still have soooo far to go! I had a week like that... and I had to make a decision. Would I allow myself to embrace the change and let God show me what He was trying to teach me?

Recently I read that forgiveness means letting go of the right to be offended. Oh ouch! It is so much more natural to hold on to offense and fight for our rights. In my Sunday school class, we are studying Lisa Bevere's book "Out of Control and Loving It." This week we were discussing the things we have learned so far and one of my ladies said "It is so hard because it goes against my nature not to fight back." Another wise lady responded "It is against your nature... your sin nature!" Ouch but wow!

The truth is that no matter how hard I fight I have no control of the actions of another person. I have to keep myself in line with Christ and let Him worry about others. When we humble ourselves and let Him be our defender, we are simply recognizing that we are not in control. If someone wants to believe bad of you, no matter what you say or how many times you say it, they will still believe the bad. Our witness and character should be our best defense. What a great opportunity to reflect on what witness we have created! So instead of that being a negative thing, we have a Father who loves us enough to allow these things in our life to grow us into His image! It sure is enough to keep us humble and on our knees; which is exactly where we are strongest!

Fitness Check In

For those of you who have read this blog, you know that my husband (Lee) and I are participating in a fitness program known as Body For Life. This is a 12 week program that involves exercise and eating healthy every 2-3 hours throughout the day. We are in the middle of week 5 now and I am so proud to say I am 1/3 of the way done.

I have lost 8 lbs and several inches off of my waist and stomach. The best thing I can say about that is that my clothes fit so much better. Lee has lost almost exactly the same as me and is looking so good! It has been soooo much easier because we are doing this together. Because of that, we can motivate each other when we feel like quitting or don't want to get up at 5 in the morning!

I reminded him the other day that we used to talk about finding a hobby that we both enjoy to do together. It looks like we have and I think it was the best thing we could have done for ourselves and for our marriage. It really spices things up and gives us another thing in common. Sometimes, as pastors, we have a tendency to talk about ministry and the concerns it brings when we are together but it is good when we have other things to share.

I am also happy with the progress I see my body making. When I first started, I could hardly do an inverted push-up or the elliptical machine. This morning I was amazed at how far my body has come in only 4 weeks. I feel so much healthier and not bloated all the time! I actually crave water now. So that is my latest fitness update. I will let you know how things go as I go through the next 2 weeks!

New School Year Reflections

This is a big day for us! My oldest is now a HS senior and my 'baby' is in 9th grade! This morning after we prayed as a family, they squacked when I ran to get the camera! I can't help it! The mom in me wants to capture every moment I can this year. I know I can't freeze time, but I also know this year will fly by.

These times are so important. I wish teenagers could understand how the decisions they make right now affect their entire future. It seems strange that we know a teenager's brain is not fully developed yet, but they have the responsibility of decisions that they need a complete brain to make!

I am so thankful for my boys and I cherish the time we have together. I am attempting to slow down and put certain things on hold as I create memories with them in the time I have left to be with them!

Stopping your ears

I read a quote today by Charles Spurgeon. "You cannot stop people's tongues, and therefore the best thing is to stop your own ears and never mind what is spoken."

What do you do when someone is spreading absolute lies about you? This is something I have always struggled with. But honestly this time I am just at such peace in this situation. I am so thankful that God's peace has been so strong in the middle of all of the storm..

This quote means alot to me right now because the other day when I heard the latest slanderous comment she had made I told me husband, "Ok, that's enough. I don't want to hear any more. " And I truly don't! I don't want to hear any more of what she is up to, who she is with and what she is saying. I have chosen to close my ears to it.

Truthfully, this makes it soooo much easier to pray blessings for her; which I am determined to do. I am determined to see her as God sees her and am earnestly praying for her spiritual restoration. I am also honestly excited about what I believe God is going to do in her life through this situation.

Early Morning Exercise and Food

One of the things I am doing on my "body for life" journey is daily exercise. Since I work fulltime and am tired at night, besides the fact I want to spend as much time with my family as possible in the evenings. I am exercising in the mornings.

I have to say the key for me is that my husband is getting up and working out with me. He is such an encouragment to me. It makes all the difference in the world when your spouse is your partner. This morning we hit the gym at 6 and did our upper body workout. Afterwards, I made us a protein shake with the EAS vanilla protein, a handful of blueberries and skimmed milk. I also put our glutimine powder in there so I wouldn't have to taste it! My arms are Soooo sore!

I have had a good day though and am getting in plenty of water and my healthy carbs and proteins. For lunch today I made barbeque chicken pita pizzas. They were awesome and my dh and I shared one. For dinner he is grilling sirloin for us and we will have a small baked potato and big salad!

New Book Review for Christians in Sales

This time last year, I officially joined the workforce as a sales representative for a State Farm agent. The first few months were filled with training and becoming licensed. I really loved the challenge of passing all the state and company exams, as well as learning the insurance business.

Fast forward to year 2 and my boss has new goals for me... namely sales. This is new territory for me and I am being stretched in new directions. These challenges are definitely taking me out of my comfort zone. Because of this, the title of the book I am reviewing "Jungle Warfare: A basic manual for Christians in Sales." immediately caught my attention.

To be honest with you: it IS a jungle out here! How to navigate the marketplace and 'compete' in a totally secular environment is unfamiliar territory for me and I do have days I feel like Rambo must have felt dropped off in enemy territory!

This book is great because the author used his grandfather's World War 2 jungle warfare manual. A page of instructions from this guide is used as a preface to each chapter. The chapters are short and intended to be read one a day for a 22 day guidebook. The book does a good job of focusing us on the fact that our focus is not ourselves but Christ. This is a lesson I have to keep reminding myself. My job and being the best in the world's eyes is not what true success is all about. Each chapter also has a prayer and questions to ask yourself about your job and how it relates to your faith.

Overall I think it is a good book to keep in your library. I brought mine to work and refer to it when I need to focus on my priorities.

Body for Life:Getting Fit!

Several years ago, my husband and I decided we needed to get into shape. We had just moved from St. Louis to a small town in Southern Illinois and after looking at some pictures (Ouch!) we decided that we wanted to change our habits and get our bodies into shape.

We looked at different programs and settled on Body for Life. This program was designed by Bill Phillips and has been around for several years. The basics of the program involve eating a balance of healthy carbs and protein throughout the day, coupled with switching off daily between aerobic activity and weight lifting. We started this program and immediately saw great results. Not only did we look better, but we felt better too. Our small town had a small fitness center and we were basically given a key when we joined.

Fast forward 4 years and here we are in a new town and with new jobs! Our healthy habits have more or less continued, but lately we have started to feel a strong sense of responsibility concerning our health. For my husband, it started when he was praying over his food at McDonalds one day. He thought "Why am I praying for God to bless what is obviously cursed?" Now, we ate at McD's today so don't get all offended, but what I am saying is that we were not eating food that is fuel for our body but filling ourselves up with junk.

So now we are purposely asking God to help us take care of the temples He gave us. We are exercising regularly and not going to bed bloated and exhausted. We are drinking water and eating healthy foods. Sporatically, I may post something I have or am learning from this journey.

Letting Go.

this can mean people in my life
people that are no longer a part of my life but I still second guess myself about
wondering why I still think about them
and second guessing what they think about me

this can mean the past
remembering only the good things about a time that is over
or rehashing the bad times...
forgiving those who have wronged us and the questions we have about the sovereignty of God.

To move forward we have to let go.

So many people live in the past and forget about the future instead of forgetting the past and moving into the future.

Facebook Etiquette

I remember when I first discovered facebook... It was so exciting! I reconnected with family and friends I hadn't seen or heard from in years. When you have moved as often as we have, it is so easy to lose contact with people. I consider it a real blessing from God that it is available to reconnect with people through.

I keep waiting for someone to post a "10 Commandments for Christians on Facebook". So here is my small attempt to address some of the things I have seen and experienced.

1) You should not put facebook before God. (When you find yourself checking your facebook first thing in the morning, last thing at night and 200 times in between, you may need to ask yourself if you are praying that often!)

2) You should not post things on facebook that you would be ashamed to say in person. Remember that everyone you have on your friends list can see what you post! I recently had someone I know delete me from their friends list and tell me by way of explanation that they did not want me to be offended by the things they post on facebook....????

3) You should not post comments using your spouse or children's profiles....Sometimes this one can be funny but actually it can get them or you in trouble!!!

4) Please don't cut down or criticize your children and spouse on facebook; not only does it embarrass them but it makes you look really bad.

5) You should not gripe about your job or your spouse's job/coworkers on facebook. In case you haven't noticed, most people know where you work!

6) Please stop with all the farmville requests. If you have friends that are Farmville fans, by all means, go for it and invite them to participate with your collection of piggies.... Those of us who have not responded to the first 100 invites are probably not going to take up farming.

7) Remember Facebook is not twitter. Please do not update every 2 seconds of your life. Nobody really wants to know if you are having your second cup of coffee or want to go back to bed every 20 minutes all day long.

8) Give people grace on facebook! Sometimes things may come out the wrong way. This is part of cyber communication and not being able to see the 'tone' of a comment that can mean alot of things just depending on the way they are said.

9) If you get offended and delete someone in haste, don't expect them to send you another invite. It is up to you to make things right and ask that person to be your friend again. Next time you should think twice about the previous commandments before deleting people.

10) ? I will edit to include 10 when someone reads this and thinks of another one!

Thank God for facebook! It is a blessing and a curse; depending on how we choose to use it.

"a wise woman builds her house"

I have been in a real funk this week! My mom has been really sick. She was diagnosed with COPD a few months ago. This really stinks,especially because she has never smoked yet has the lungs of a lifetime smoker. She did grow up in a home of smokers and remembers being in the car as a child and not being able to breathe because both of the adults in the car were smoking and the windows were rolled up.

I have spent the last 2 weekends driving back and forth to Tennessee to be with her in the hospital. I worry about her health and it brings back too many memories about my frequent trips last year when my sister was dying. So I have been tired and experiencing a deep sorrow.

In the middle of all of this, I am trying to live my life as a wife, mother, fulltime employee and pastor's spouse. There are so many blessings around me and I am consciously reminding myself of how blessed I am. I also have to remember that I can't take my emotions out on those around me that love me and need me.

Proverbs 14:1 is a great verse to remind me of my responsibility to build my house! This is something that happens every day, not only when I want it to. They are the daily choices I make that decide whether I am building or tearing down those around me.

I have never been more conscious of the time passing quickly. My Nate will be a senior this year and moving out into the world. My prayer is that he sees my faith and perseverance even in these difficult times and they are building blocks for him in pursuing all he can be in Christ. Drew will follow him in just a few years. What a joy and a challenge to be their mother and the builder of the atmosphere of their home!

The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews

I love a good read! and this book keeps you guessing. The style of Andy Andrews leaves you wondering how much of this story is fiction and how much really happened. Considering the pictures we are shown at the end, I choose to believe there is more than a little fact to the tale of romance. I also enjoyed learning about the history of a period of time in America that we hear little about.... definitely a story about second chances and faith redeemed!

Memorial Musings

We had a great Memorial weekend! We were surprised to have a visit from some old friends from our home church, Susanne and Chris Goff. Suzanne just returned from Iraq, where she served in the military for one year at Victory Camp (which used to be the palace of Saddam). She shared a slide show at our church Sunday morning from her stay there.

It was very interesting to me that the ornate chandeliers and 'special touches' in Saddam's palaces were actually made of plastic! Imagine all of his people coming in and seeing his palace with all it's spendor and not realizing it was all fake!

Isn't that what the devil does? He makes the wicked look so blessed and happy.... makes us wonder what we are doing wrong. The truth is it is all fake! If we were to see behind the veil and into the reality of their lives, we would see that it was all pretend and temporary.

Faithful

Proverbs 25:19 "Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble."

We waste so much time and energy on the unfaithful.

I know as a pastor's wife I have been guilty of seeing the empty pews rather than the faces of those that fill the others!

Why is that so easy to do?

God has really been working on me in this area. This past Sunday we had a fellowship and luncheon after church. Because of this, several of my regulars were not in Sunday school... to be totally honest since all of them also work in the church in different areas, most Sundays someone is missing.

The past 2 weeks though I have seen a one on one breakthrough in my 'small group support environment'. I have left Sunday school actually excited about the raw emotions and interactions that had gone on. So as God does a new thing there, He is also doing a new thing in me. Teaching me to look at the individual and not the group.

I am learning in my life not to rely on those I think will be there for me or worry about those who make empty promises; but to allow Him to slowly build in my life a solid support of true and faithful people.

Weak Willed Women!

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. (2 Timothy 3:1-7)

There is such a debate in the christian community on the subject of women and their role in the church. It is amusing to me that alot of this debate comes from women themselves. I am a pastoring partner with my husband; meaning I take an active role in ministry; including preaching and leadership. I do this because I was called by God to ministry personally when I was 12.

My experience lately has been that some of the very women who take great offense at the idea of women in leadership and ministry roles in the church have themselves fallen prey to these warnings in scripture.
On the surface they appear to be submissive and humble but once you get to know them they are 'loaded down with sin and swayed by all kinds of evil desires". Wow! Sometimes you do not know what you are getting into when you begin a relationship. The word I am thinking of here is manipulation. I have gotten to the place in my life where I refuse to be manipulated by people who want to use me to get their way! I have been slandered by brutal women so often that I have to pray that God will help me continue to reach out to those I don't know, even when I know they have the potential to hurt me. I know this is part of being a pastor's wife but it sure opens your eyes to our human, fallen nature!

"always learning but never coming to knowledge of the truth" It seems some Christian women today are jumping on every bandwagon they can. I can't keep up with whether we are staying home at the hearth this month baking bread or going out to win the world! lol. Are you unstable? Double minded? Unforgiving of others? Maybe you are in a relationship that you know is unhealthy but you have started to depend on that person to provide you with...drama?

Women arise! God wants us to be stable and secure in Him. How do these things worm their way into our homes? We invite them in through the television, internet, telephone, etc. I am strong in Christ... simply because when I am weak He is strong! We are living in the last days and it is more important than ever that we grow up and mature in Christ, becoming the women of God that we hear about in scruptures that will rise up and prophecy in the last days, not the weak-willed women of this passage!

Book Review: Friendship for Grown-Ups

What woman my age (still holding on to the 30's, thank you) doesn't remember "The Facts of Life" on TV? Didn't you wish you were right there living with Blair and Tootie?

Most of you know that (Blair) Lisa Whelchel grew up to be a minister's wife and major supporter of homeschooling and Christian parenting. What you may not know is that she went through a major life journey a few years ago. Turns out the picture perfect life we saw on TV was not reality for Lisa or the other girls on the show.

Friendship for GrownUps is the story she wrote about her struggle to discover both why she kept her friends at a distance and how to tear down the wall she kept around herself to make true connections with other women. I absolutely loved this book and saw myself and other women that are and have been a part of my life reflected in her story.

I would recommend this book to women without reservations.

God has not forgotton!

"God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them." Hebrews 6:10

As a woman who has spent all of my adult years in the ministry, I sometimes think about all of the people and places I have poured my life into. To be honest, that's a whole lot of energy.

At times, the human side of me wants to know what I have to show for it. Living far from home as my parents are aging is not fun. Holidays and weekends others are spending with family can be let downs.

Then there are all of the times you put yourself out there for people and they absolutely let you down. One common thread I hear at every ministers wives group, book and lecture is how to deal with hurtful people. I think a big part of this is the fact we minister to hurting people. Hurting people hurt others and who is a safer whipping boy than those who don't fight back?

Unjust? Yup

Do you ever think about these things?

This morning I found this verse in Hebrews and got such a comfort from remembering that God promises He is not unjust. He will not forget my work. He sees the love we have shown even to those who hurt us.

The next verse continues this theme. "We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure."

In other words, we can't quit! We have to keep pouring ourselves out; showing His love to others even when they don't deserve it. We are faithful even to the unfaithful. We work even when others quit.... in today's words: GOD HAS OUR BACK!

Press. Push. Pursue.

I look around and see people filled with potential.

Their eyes light up with dreams of greatness.
Their mouth speaks of destiny.
but they are waiting.

Waiting for something big to happen
that big break that will somehow launch them into the future and let them know they have arrived.

So in the meantime they do nothing.

They have not yet learned that victory comes through the journey.
God's requirement of faithfulness has not been replaced by talent or charisma.

Victory comes through the pressing, pushing and pursuing.
Pressing towards the mark faithfully
Pushing every day past discouragements, disappointments and pain
Pursuing God and His call on your life in spite of the temptation to quit.

Even when life is hard.

It is in these choices that we prove God faithful and that we honor Him.

New Book Review: How Then Should a Christian Live

The newest book I received from Thomas Nelson Publishers to review was How Then Should a Christian Live. It is part of a series from Next Generation devotional books. I think the idea is awesome.

What parent hasn't struggled to find a way to feed their child the Word in a way they can understand and digest? The book comes with a section of the Bible on MP3 (in this case 1 Corinthians through Philemon). The Bible is read by young Christian actors. The devotional book itself is easy for young teens to digest and even break down into small increments.

The concepts taught are very basic and easy to follow. Several other titles are available and easy to recommend to you!

Each of us has a personal touch. Remember when you moved away from home and came back for a visit. You take a big sniff in the air and smell.......home! We should be like that to the world. There is something about each of us that is unique. I was created to offer an aroma to those around me that no one else can.

I am passionate about touching people and making a difference in their lives. I want my children to go to bed at night feeling loved. I want those around me to know that I KNOW they are not perfect but I love them anyway! I am passionate about that, probably because I have personally experienced the rejection of others who expect you to be perfect and turn their back on you when they find out you are not.

Guess what? I don't want to be perfect in your eyes! I do NOT want to be on your pedastal. I would much rather be right there beside you, holding your hand and sharing a chuckle with you when I make a mistake! Only then can you be honest with yourself and me about who you really are! I am so passionate about that!

Women that are hurting and feel inadequate and unworthy capture my heart!!!

One of the things I have learned to appreciate about working fulltime in the public is the opportunity to work day in and day out with people. I think this is something that I lost sight of during my years as a pastor's wife, student, part-time and odd-job worker.

I have developed a new appreciation for the people I work with. We really do share in each others lives in a way that I had forgotten about. As a Christian, you are more vulnerable because your coworkers see you on a daily basis. They see you on the days you would rather be sleeping in and they watch how you handle that irate caller on the phone.

A few weeks ago, I went through the first anniversary of my sister's death. My coworkers were awesome. They got me a card and were extra caring that day. They listen when I talk about my sister and I am so appreciative of the opportunity to build relationships with them.

I can see them watching when I handle sticky situations and am beginning to get the opportunity to speak into their lives in a way that only comes with taking the time and energy to build trust and mutual respect.

I am also thankful for the people God sends in every day to my office. What an opportunity to share Christ in someone's life! My prayer list is growing and so is my list of friends.

New book review: John Maxwell

When we first moved to Carmi to pastor World Harvest Christian Center, one of the first things we did was a leadership training program. The material we used was by John Maxwell. As a result of the training, four of the adults in our church went back to school to finish their education. Several others either changed jobs or got promotions on their jobs.

Maxwell has a way of communicating that is definitely an art skill. His new Book "Everyone Communicates Few Connect" is designed to help people reach their full potential by examining how to truly connect with others through communication.

Maxwell shares five principles and five practices to use to develop your skills in communicating. One of the great things about this book is that it can help you correct bad habits of communicating by showing you the right way to connect with others. The chapters cover things like finding common ground with others, keeping it simple, and inspiring others. Life situations are used to demonstrate the principles.

As with all of Maxwell's work, putting these principles into practice personally will result in a difference in how you are perceived by others. This results in knowing that your words matter and influence outcomes because you are truly connecting with others.

Last week I was really wishing I had a new book to read when Patsy Clairmont's new book Kaleidoscope was delivered for my review.

I love a great devotional; one that challenges me and helps me to think about my spiritual life. Being a 'full-fledged' (that means 40 hrs a week outside the home) working mom/pastor's wife now, I especially appreciate those devotionals with chapters that are actually short and digestible!

For those of you not familiar with Patsy Clairmont, the words 'quick wit' and 'funny bone' are used to describe her humor. What I love about her is the heart of gold underneath her satire. Patsy is a recovering agoraphobic and her message is one of hope and healing.

In this book, Patsy takes us through the book of proverbs by breaking down verses into digestible pieces to deal with everyday life. She does this by sharing her own stories with humor and authenticity. I found myself wanting to discuss what I had just read with her but since she is not available this book would make a great focus for any women's Bible study or fellowship.

Reconnecting with old friends

The friendships of women.... what a subject! The books and articles written about the subject could fill a library!
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to become very close friends with 2 special ladies. God sent them to me at a time when I really needed to grow and learn. These two very special people became like sisters to me...in fact I still call them my sister friends. Through these relationships, I learned what a true friend is, as well as what a true friend is not! At the time, I was in a box of my own making. I was trying desperately to be what I thought everyone else wanted and expected me to be. These ladies became my armor bearers. They prayed for me and with me and loved me unconditionally.
God called us from that place of ministry and we had to part. All of us faced some pretty tough things in the next few years. One of us lost a son, two lost a brother and one lost a sister. We went through changes of churches, jobs, locations and our share of health issues. I still know they are my sister friends.
Although we have stayed in contact, this week we were able to really reconnect.
I needed that. I needed to know that there are still women out here that aren't 'pastors wives groupies'. Women that love you through thick and thin, through the good times and the bad. People you can be real with who won't throw you away when the excitement of newness has worn off and they see you without the glamour of your position blinding them.
I am so grateful for them and for all the other women God has and is putting in my life right now. I have learned to take friendship slowly...to let it blossom and let trust build and not to try so hard to make it happen myself.
I am also learning to trust that small voice of warning that something isn't right and that someone is not being honest with me. My sister friends never tried to isolate me from everyone else in my life but helped me see the God calling in me. I am truly a better woman because of them.

Book Review: Tim McGraw's "Love Your Heart"

I love a good read-aloud book! One of the joys of life is what you give to the next generation and a great way to do that is to read books to children!

Tim McGraw's new book "Love Your Heart" is a great read aloud to share with the special little girl in your life. The book is based on his daughters. Tim and Faith are working on nurturing their daughters' spirits. He does this by focusing on what is inside of us, not the outside.

Katie is the daughter in the book. She has many talents and can't decide what to do for the school talent show. The close relationship between father and daughter is shown as the father encourages Katie in all that she tries to do.

On the night of the talent show, one of Katie's friends is unable to perform her talent. Katie gives up the spotlight to help a friend and shows that she is a winner on the inside, thus the title "Love Your Heart". I plan to read this book to my class of girls I teach at church then gift it to my beautiful niece, Reagan. She is beautiful on the inside and I love her heart!

Book Review: Rediscovering God in America

One of the things I am thankful for in my life is my upbringing in a Christian school. For those of you who have not experienced that, let me assure you that American history seen through the eyes of a Christian curriculum is much different than what you were taught if you went to public school!

In this book, Newt Gingrich explores the subject of the role of God and the Christian religion in American history. He accomplishes this by taking us on a stroll through Washington DC. As he visits the memorials and monuments that most of us are familiar with, he explains the purpose of each monument and the deeper spiritual, Christian purpose behind each memorial.

My children did not have the privelege of a Christian school education, but one thing this mom made sure of is that I gave them quality literature that gave the truth behind American history and the rich Christian history we enjoy in this country. This book is a valuable addition to that collection.

This week our church has been doing the Daniel fast. For most of our church people, this is the first fast they have been on and I have to say I am so proud of them.

The purpose of our fast was to pray for unity and the unity we have seen just over the course of the fast has been so amazing! People I never thought would want to be a part of this are participating and the growth spiritually is making me go "Wow!" over and over again.

I have been especially proud of my 2 boys. Nate and Drew are 14 and 17 and they committed to the 3 day fast the 'beginners' did. Nate works at McDonald's and called me Monday night stressed out! But he persevered and saw a spiritual breakthrough in his worship Wed. night that totally excited him and made him understand what the purpose of fasting is. Drew got a friend to commit with him and my husband picked them up from school every day at lunch to take them home to eat. They both did great and I am such a proud mama! We did not make them participate but encouraged them to.

This time is teaching me so much. The most important lesson I am learning in my life right now is total dependence on God. The realization that we are not good enough, smart enough, charismatic enough, or just enough in and of ourselves. Without the power of the spirit of God in our lives, families and churches, we will fail. But when we allow the spirit of God to move in us and through us we will see mighty things happen!

Are you stuck?

As a pastor's wife and someone who works in customer relations daily, I meet alot of people. I am really thankful for my secular job and I know one of the reasons God has placed me there is the awesome opportunity to meet and get to know people in my small community. I have had the opportunity to share the Word with some and have even seen some come to our church.

One thing I have noticed recently is the resiliency some people have. I think it is a great witness. I have met people in my life that have suffered terrible things: death, disability, financial ruin. To see someone suffer and get up again the next day to face the world is an amazing testimony.

I know other people who seem stuck.

Some people get stuck in their childhood. "Dad was awful to us kids so my life is awful."

Some get stuck in their missed opportunities. I have been there and done that. As a Christian, it is hard to understand how you give your all to something and it just doesn't happen the way you thought it would.

Others seems stuck on the person who did them wrong and refuse to free themselves by practicing forgiveness.

I have compassion for those who have lost a loved one. I still grieve daily over the loss of my sister so this past year has brought me to a new understanding of grief. But I pray to God I don't get stuck.

Paul said in Philippians 3 "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

So what do we do when we feel stuck? I think first of all we get up...day after day. Then we start allowing ourselves to think about other things. Maybe then we even quit talking about it to everyone all the time. I do think there are times we reach out to others and ask for help.

I know it is so easy to think we are the only person in the world who has been through what we have but guess what? We are not! People everywhere are hurting. That is why we need each other. But we can't allow tragedy and life's trouble to control us, change us, or make us stuck somewhere we were never meant to be!

Just in time for Christmas comes a great gift book for a young family in your life. This hardcover gift Bible is perfect for a family to read together. It includes 250 stories of the Bible in the NKJV. The stories include selections from the Old and New Testaments in short and easy to read passages.

From the story of creation to selections from Revelations, the book has put together some of my favorite stories. My junior high son picked it up today and just kept reading. The flow of stories from one to another connects the books of the Bible and their chronological flow well.

I cannot believe 2009 is almost gone!

Where has the time gone?

The realization that December starts in just a few days has caused me to reflect on all that has happened this year. I started this year with such excitement... I just knew so much was going to happen.

Well it did. As you know if you have read this blog, I lost my sister to aplastic anemia in March of this year. I still feel the absence in my life. I started this year thinking people and situations would be a certain way that has turned out very differently.

I am able to refocus myself on what is important in life and why I am what I am, do what I do and believe what I believe.

God is still God. He is still faithful. He is in control of my life because I have chosen to give Him control.

I am moving forward and thanking Him for this year; with all of its bumps and turns!

Moving Right Along

Doesn't it seem like life is moving and changing so fast? It seems like yesterday was the beginning of the year, yet the calendar says May! If you know me, you know this year has been crazy for my life. Yet life does not wait until you are ready to move forward, time is passing by.

I was reminded today of the fact that sometimes the choices we make for ourselves have far-reaching results for others in our lives. The choices we make about our own relationships can rob others of relationships they would and should have experienced.

One thing we have promised our children is that none of our experiences in past family relationships will affect their opportunity to form a relationship with that person. I can honestly say that to the best of our ability we have kept that promise. They are young men now and those who have reached out to them to touch and care about their lives are those they understand to be their family. I feel sad for those who have not chosen that. They have missed out on impacting some awesome young men.

I also feel sad for parents who have not allowed their children to make that choice. This is why the Bible says to lay aside all malice. Malice and selfish ambition will destroy individuals, relationships, and families. If that has happened to you, I encourage you to start today to reach out to those you want to know better. Don't allow the mistakes of others to dictate your future! You may be pleasantly surprised at the relationships waiting around the corner!

Memorial Day Musings

Memorial Day is always an emotional weekend for me. You see, my birth father served three tours of Vietnam and came home from war alive only to be killed by a drunk driver on the side of the road across the street from our house. I don't dwell on it, but these thoughts are always in the back of my mind during this holiday weekend.

Drinking and driving has always been a hot button for me. As a teenager, I remember getting so angry when I would be in a restaurant and the party at the next table would get plastered, then leave in their vehicle.

When we pastored in Union City, TN, we heard a banging noise one night and found our next door neighbor had fallen and broken his hip after he drove home drunk and fell off his front porch while trying to unlock his house. His wife actually said to me, "I told him I knew he was not too drunk to drive but he was too drunk to walk." Excuse me??? The scary thing is our son, Nathan's room was right next to were he drove into his driveway every night, drunk as a skunk.

Enough of that subject!

I grew up in a military home and in a military town. I did not realize until I married and moved away that intense patriotism was not the norm for everyone. I am so thankful to be a citizen of this country. It is my prayer that as we stay on our faces before God and allow Him to lead our lives, we will continue to see God move in our land. Thank you to all of those who serve in the military and public places!

Book Review: American Patriot's Study Bible, NKJV

This hardback Bible is advertised as a study Bible. When I read the description, I wondered how American history was going to be a part of the package... it really reads as a companion to the Bible itself.

The Bible points out references that leaders in American history found relevant to their lives and their belief about government. Some of the articles talk about the faith of the founding fathers, the wars America has fought, how Christianity aided the settling of the frontier, and equal rights. Throughout the Bible itself are commentaries of individual Christians in American history and character sketches.

It is an interesting Bible/companion rolled into one.

Book review: The Noticer by Andy Andrews

This is my latest book to review from Thomas Nelson Bloggers.

There is nothing I like more than to spend an evening (or a day) snuggled up with a good book. I appreciated the fact that this was an 'easy read'. Each chapter focuses on a different person living or travelling through Orange Beach, Alabama. Each is impacted by a man named Jones. Jones seems to know personal things about each and how to fix the biggest problem in each life. As he counsels each, there is an individual moral lesson that shines through each chapter. Love languages, consequences, responsibility... these are some of the lessons that shine in this book.

I think it would be a good gift to place in a hospital room, waiting room, or to read on a plane or a trip. The only problem I had with the book is it does not mention or emphasize a relationship with Jesus Christ. For this reason, I would be careful who I gave or recommended this book to.

The courage to jump

I remember taking swimming lessons as a small child.

To graduate from the class we had to jump off the diving board.

I stood on the edge every day. I knew I could swim. I had made friends with my lifeguards and knew they would not let me drown..... but I could not take that step.

At night I would think about my lesson time the next day.
I would imagine myself jumping off the board and swimming to the side.
The next day I would be frozen... on the edge.

On the final day of class, one of the lifeguards offered to jump with me. She came behind me and wrapped her arms around me and we jumped together.

She gained nothing for her efforts but a chipped tooth (true story!) but I had gained the courage to jump into the water.

Even though I am now in my thirties, I MAKE myself jump off the diving board at least once every time I go swimming.

Not because I am a great athlete or in great shape, but because I don't want to lose my nerve. I know how easily you can get frozen on the edge of the pool, gazing into the water but unable to find the courage to jump.

The courage to sing

When I was a child, I loved to sing.

Our church had a children's choir and I loved it. I loved the weekly practices, the performances and the monthly visits to the nursing home. The director, Pat Wallace, was one of my heroes. I knew without a doubt she loved God and me and I would have done anything for her. Singing was one of my joys.

Then one day my dad told me I couldn't sing. "You can't carry a tune in a bucket" was how he put it. I knew even then that he didn't say it to hurt me but it did. I lost my confidence and I lost my joy in singing. When I was in high school youth group, the reality that singing 'opportunities ' went to other people confirmed in my heart what my dad had said.

Of course I married a preacher! Doesn't everyone know that pastors wives are supposed to sing? Not this one! My husband likes my voice and on occasion I have sang for him when he was in a pinch....but never with confidence or joy. I love to speak in front of people and am pretty confident about it but singing is soooo hard for me.

My children sing. This is a fact that I am in awe of. My oldest son can play about anything he picks up and really thought for a long time he could not sing but I NEVER told him that. His voice changed and now he is a great worship leader. My youngest son has a natural voice but still lacks the confidence to develop it. It is coming and if I have my way no one will put doubt into his mind about that! He is starting to sing for special services and youth events and I am looking forward to what God has for him in that.

My children love my voice too and I have other people hear me singing during times of worship and ask me why I don't consider myself a singer. It surprises me every time. Singing is something I do for God.

Joy and confidence are so easily taken away by others.

Don't You Dare Quit!

It is not in the starting that winners are made....... but the starting again.

I was with a new friend tonight and we were talking about starting again. Like most of us, she has experienced hurt in the church. I still remember that first time I felt complete betrayal in someone I had believed in. The devastation is impossible to explain until you have experienced it for yourself; and believe me, you will experience it if you are working for God in a passionate and wholehearted way.

Like most of us do, she felt shattered. She admitted that it took time for her to feel whole enough to be a part of a church again. You know, that is ok! There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking time to allow God to heal you. What is important is what we do in the meantime.

This is not the time to hide out and lick your wounds. It is definitely not a time to become consumed with the gossip and drama the situation brought about in other people. It is a time to get alone with God. It is a time to allow Him to search your heart and heal the wounds. It is a time to get deep in His Word. Find a book of the Bible that ministers to you. One friend of mine uses Job while another says Jeremiah fit her personality and situation.

Those are all things you can do.... What you can't do is quit.

I love The Biggest Loser. Jillian cracks me up when she sticks her face in theirs and yells "Don't you dare quit!" as they are crying, sweating ans snorting on the treadmill. We each need a Jillian to get in our face and yell at us until we get up after falling flat on our face.

I know it hurts. I have felt the pain of betrayal. I know you feel alone and angry and shattered. God has not forgotten you. He still holds you in the palm of His hand. When He promised He would never leave you or forsake you He already knew you would face a day just like today. You are a winner and you are destined to walk in Him so please don't quit and if you already have, its not too late to start again!

Is my dream really my dream?

As you know if you read my last post, I am reading the John Maxwell book Put Your Dream to the Test; 10 questions to help you see it and seize it. I am going to share what I learn in each chapter here one my blog.

Is my dream really my dream? How have my plans, goals and desires been influenced by others? Is it possible that my dream is a result of who others think I am? Who I wish I was?

'When the dream is right for the person, and the person is right for the dream, the two cannot be separated from each other.' (Maxwell)

Ownership is the first vital step to fulfilling a dream. You have to take responsibility for your dream. One of the excuses we make is that it is not the right time to pursue our dream. I did this for years and then one day I woke up and realized I had not reached ANY of the goals I had set for myself career wise. "the timing will never be perfect for you to pursue your dream, so you might as well start now."

How to take ownership of your dream

1) Be willing to bet on yourself-Owning a dream means having your belief in yourself outweigh your fears.

2) Lead your life instead of just accepting your life.

3) Love what you do and do what you love.

4) Don't compare yourself to others.

5) Believe in your vision for the future even when no one else understands you.

John Maxwell and Leadership

Every time we do a series by John Maxwell at church we see big change in people's lives. This last time, 3 adults from the group went back to collegeg to pursue their dreams of teaching.

The latest book by John Maxwell is called "Put your dream to the test". When I got the opportunity to read and review it, I jumped at it because I love his style and because he has a real gift for inspiring others to believe in themselves.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is "A dream is a compelling vision you see in your heart that's too big to accomplish without the help of others." Although Maxwell is also a speaker for organizations outside of the church, I think this pretty much sums up successful church leadership.
I am thankful to be married to a man who sees team leadership as essential to a successful ministry. I have been under lone ranger leaders and it is not an experience I would like to repeat.

There are a lot of reasons people never start pursuing their dreams, give up on their dreams, or never see their dreams come to pass. John covers all of those in his book. The 10 questions covered in this book to help you identify and reach your dreams are questions of: Ownership, Clarity, Reality, Passion, Pathway, People, Cost, Tenacity, Fulfillment and Significance.

“It’s one thing to have a dream. It’s another to do the things needed to achieve it,” says Maxwell. “If you’re willing to put your dream to the test – and do what’s needed to answer yes to the ten dream questions – then your odds are very good for seeing your dream become a reality.”

I absolutely love the worship at our church. I am so thankful to be in a church that is blessed with a great worship leader, musicians and a worship team but recently God reminded me that it is not about the music or the talent but all about the heart.

I started subbing as a personal aide at Brownsville School. This special education school serves seven counties in Southeastern Illinois. The students range in age from young to 22 years old. I have never done this type of work before and it has been challenging for me emotionally. I am a very tender hearted person and my heart hurts for some of the challenges these young people face. I also have so much respect for the commitment and love of their families; sometimes single parents and grandparents.

Last Friday, I was privileged to be there when they had their annual talent show. It was totally awesome and I loved every moment of it. I heard several rounds of twinkle, twinkle, little star. Many of the students sang along with cds and their choices in song was a tribute to those they loved.

The highlight of the day for me was almost the last song. There was a young man of about 16 years of age. He was in a wheelchair that converted into a standing ramp to allow him to stand before the audience. His dark hair and age reminded me of my oldest son. He stood before the school and as the music started I realized it was familiar to me. He sang :How great is our God.

As he sang he raised his hands in praise to God. I watched as his personal aide stood and lifted her hands in worship. Then something amazing happened. The students who could stood up also and even some of those who couldn't lifted their hands as the song played. I don't think I will ever hear that song again without picturing him in my mind. I journal during my devotional time. Sometimes I look through my past journals and they minister to me in a different way. It is almost like reading the writing of someone else. I read an old entry the other day. I had written the following: "Each of us must walk our faith journey alone. There are times in our walk that our path may coincide with others. During those times the walk is easier but we must continue forward even when we find ourselves alone on the path. "

The past few months have been absolutely draining for me. I am finally getting back to who I am. I am rediscovering some things about myself on the way. One way God is ministering to me is through books. Max Lucado's writings have been a big part of the process during this time.

The copy of His Name is Jesus I received is a hardcover gift book. It is absolutely beautifully made. It journeys from the birth of Christ to His resurrection. His way of writing opens your heart to the miracle of who Christ was and who He became for us. Easter is an awesome time of year to read this book. I highly recommend it even as a gift or a new believer or a searcher.

My faith journey, like yours, is far from over. I have been and am fortunate to have those who care praying for me. As we continue to seek God, He is always faithul!

Life and Death

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

My sister, Rachel, is gone now. She died last Wednesday, March 18. I received a phone call from my family earlier that day to let me know the time was short. I changed my plans and left for Tennessee. I was there for about three hours before she died. I was able to hold her hand, pray for her, sing to her and just be there.

One of Rachel's biggest fears was not being able to breathe. It was awful to watch her continue this way. I consider it a blessing that at the very end of her life, her breathing became easier and more shallow until it finally stopped. It was very peaceful and I know she is finally at peace.

My husband preached the funeral. He did an awesome job and shared the story of Lazarus. A friend had sent me the scripture during this time and it had been on my mind throughout the week of her passing.

My youngest sister had her first baby three days before the death. It was a reminder of how precious life is. I am so thankful for the many prayers and support that I and my family have received during this time. I continue to be burdened for Rachel's young son, Trevor and Billy, her husband of 17 years.

She is now at peace and in no longer in pain.

New Book Review:In the Footsteps of Paul

All I can say is WOW! This is by far the best book I have received from Thomas Nelson Publishers. This is a coffee table picture gift quality book. The book was authored and the photographs were taken by world renowned photographer Ken Duncan.

The pictures themselves are beautiful. They include landscape photographs of the places Paul travelled throughout his life, as well as paintings, maps and other artifacts of the life of Paul.

And if the pictures and illustrations themselves are not enough to get your blood pumping, the book tells the story of Paul is the words of the author, scriptures, and Christians theologians and historians like John MacArthur, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Philip Yancey, and Max Lucado.

I originally planned to keep this book to give to my husband on a special occasion but I can't wait! Not only do I know he will want to read it now but I want to read it again and I know my teenagers will also. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there interested in the life of Paul.

"Its not in my circle"

I try to do too much.... I think I am like most women in that regard. It seems I am always juggling more than one plate at a time. While I am juggling, I am thinking about the other plates that are waiting on me to pick them up!

During this struggle with my sister dying, I have been beating myself up over and over. If I am Illinois taking care of my family, school and church responsibilities I am thinking about the reasons I should be in Tennessee. When I am in Tennessee, I feel guilty for all the responsibilities I have waiting in Illinois. And like most women, I am my worst critic.

My oldest son is a musician and before we moved our last church was short on musicians. One day he said to me "Mom, if I could just play the guitar, piano and drums at the same time it would sound good." My life feels like that right now! But the truth is I can't do all the things I would like to and be effective at any one thing.

My husband has a great illustration he uses for himself and in counselling (I think I am his most frequent counsellee at the moment). He draws a big circle and puts everything we stress about and want to do inside. He then draws a small circle and puts inside of that circle the things we are actually responsible for and can do.

There are lots of things I feel guilty about that are not in my circle! When that happens, I have to surrender those things and people to God and pray... Casting all of my cares upon HIM for HE cares for me. A friend recently reminded me of the following verse: "Seek peace and pursue it." I am learning that sometimes pursuing peace means recognizing what and who brings turmoil in my life and taking the steps necessary to protect the peace of God within me. So don't be offended if you ask me something and I say to you "Sorry, it's not in my circle!"

If I lose everything but Christ...... Assurance in times of hardship

If I lose everything but Christ,
yet Christ is my everything,
what have I truly lost?
Nothing!

As a pastor's wife, almost daily people tell me their problems. The news of economic hard times is not a joke. Confessions of spouses getting laid off, people losing their homes, and cars being repossessed have become frequent in my life.

I am like most people in that I thought I would always have certain possessions and luxuries. We personally are down to one car right now and I am in school an hour away from home. My husband is a pastor and a vehicle for him is a necessity.... We have made this a matter of prayer and are borrowing a car right now so I appreciate you adding that to your own growing prayer list!

I heard on the news the other day that households are combining with other households in order to save on living expenses. Another news reports compared the tent cities of homeless in major cities to those during the great depression.

And yet God is still God. He is in the middle of the tent cities of Sacramento. He is with the housewife trying to stretch the budget to include food and other necessities. He is with the teenager who does not understand why she does not have the luxuries her friends take for granted. He is right there when each house of a believer is foreclosed on. He didn't take a break or walk away because the plant is closing.

He never fails. His peace and his comfort will hold you in your darkest hour. Everything in your life may be striped away yet He remains. Even as the disciples were boiled in a pot of water, beaten, crucified and stoned He remains the Savior of the world.

When believers in Africa are dying for their faith, North Korean Christians are flattened by armored tanks, and Indian wives who becomes Christians are beaten to death by their husbands, we still serve a good God.

Unbelievers have asked me "How can you serve God in a world full of so much pain?" My answer to them is "How can you go through a life of so much pain without God?" He is all there is worth holding on to.

Book Review: Rachel's Tears

I just finished reading an awesome book called "Rachel's Tears" All of us remember the Columbine shooting. This book is written by the family of one of the Christian girls that was killed that day. It is a compilation of those who knew Rachel Scott and letters and pictures from her journal. The book journeys through the events leading up to and following the Columbine tragedy.

If you know my family situation, you know we are facing our own difficult time. I picked this book up during a time when I was very down and depressed. I was literally too exhausted to talk to anyone and needed an excape.

I cried as I read about the life and death of this young girl. I was so moved by her desire to be used of God while she struggled with the normal teenage desire to be accepted and loved by her peers.

The year before she died she wrote the following in a friend's yearbook: Don't let your character change color with your environment. Find who you are and let it stay in its true colors."

Personal accountability

Have you noticed lately that our society has a problem with accountability?

No one wants to answer to another for their actions.

I am reminded of a young man we had in our youth group years ago. J___ was a quirky teenage boy who had made it through the awkward junior high years and looked like a young man. Like most 18 year olds, he was still a boy in a man's body.

One day J_____ came to my husband and said "I am tired of my parents telling me what to do all the time. I am getting away from it. I am joining the army."

Now if you have a military background at all you understand how completely stupid that statement is. The military experience is all about learning self-discipline. They tell you where and when to eat, sleep, spit and breathe.

My husband was quick on his feet and told him "That is exactly what you need to do."

The truth is that we all answer to someone. Children hate answering to their parents and teachers, not realizing that their parents are answering to their bosses, spouses are answering to each other and we are all answering to God.

Personal accountability is not a dirty word. The bible tells us that every one of us will give an account to God for the words that we speak and the things that we do.

It is time we embraced the relationships that personal accountability brings into our lives. It is sometimes hard to accept but God has placed authorities and people in our lives to help us, not to hurt us.

Personal Commitment

I was listening to a radio interview with Christian songwriter and performer Steve Greene yesterday. Steve's parents were missionaries and he was raised in a very strict Christian home. When he went to college, he was faced with temptations and challenges to his belief system. He stated that he knew God was real and that his parents were committed to him but he had to decide for himself what his personal commitment would be and why.

What is your personal commitment level to God and why are you committed? Is it because that is how you were raised? Maybe it is because that is the environment you find yourself in. Perhaps your parents or spouse have expectations that keep you 'in line'.

The fact of the matter is we can do all the right things for all the wrong reasons. God does not want my life to 'look' holy. That is all about appearances. God wants me to 'be' holy for the simple reason that He is holy and I desire to be like Him. So often, we do things because others are looking at us and we know what their expectations are for our lives. When we do something right or good for that reason, we have completely missed the mark.

God wants me to love Him so much that pleasing Him in what I do comes from the love I have for Him and my commitment to live out that love in my life.

I go to the Rock

I go to the Rock.

Wow! What more can describe my life right now than the words of this song?

So much has happened since this year began. My sister, Rachel, is still alive but on hospice. I have spent the last month going back and forth between IL and TN. I have been sick twice and more down than I remember ever being before. My son, Nathan, totalled our second vehicle. Of course, this was the vehicle we only had liability insurance on so we are now in desperate need of another car... without the fiances to get one.

But through all of these circumstances, I have not lost sight of the truth that "This too shall pass" I know that because I am unable to do this on my own God will take care of it. He is my heavenly Father and my provider. Even when I was so down I could not look up, I never forgot that He was there and I would come out.

I honestly don't know how people make it without God in their lives.

I am so thankful that He is in control. Nothing I have experienced in these short weeks caught Him by surprise. Praise God for His amazing grace!

I am tired of cleaning up after my children. Yes, it is true and I apologise to all of you endlessly patient and enduring mothers. I used to be you. I homeschooled my children when they were younger. We had the chore charts and they learned how to do all of the household chores properly. Can I brag a little and tell you they were pretty good at it? Not all boys know how to cook a meal, clean a bathroom and do laundry; but my guys do.

Now my problem.... They don't do it! Not only do they procrastinate at the 'household chores' I ask them to do, they don't even clean up after themselves half the time! Can I tell you how frustrated I am at this. I am seriously bummed. Now that I am in school full-time, I thought they would take up some slack but my oldest just got a job at Dairy Queen, plays in 2 Christian bands, does drama, band and chorus and is never home. His room is embarrassing (evidently not to him). My youngest plays sports and has way too many social events and friends.

Ok, what is the point of all of the griping? They have learned it from me but don't put it into practice! So I was talking to God about this today and he reminded me of these verses. You see, I grew up in church and know what truth is. I know how to be noble and I understand the importance of purity and doing what is right. But I admit that sometimes I don't choose the lovely, excellent or praiseworthy thing.

How frustrating that must be to my heavenly Father. He has entrusted me with the Holy Spirit, knowing that the power I need to think and dwell on these things is possible through this gift in my life. It is time to put it into practice. Time to grow up in the Lord and choose to do right. The knowledge is there. The ability is there. But sometimes we get so busy with our own plans and ways that we neglect the very person He designed for us to be.

And you know, like my children, if we keep ourselves right and do what we should do day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment, we won't have a big mess to clean up when God finally points our mess out to us!

For the Tough Times.......

As you know of you have been reading my blog, my sister has a terminal illness. This is the first immediate family member I have dealt with this kind of thing with. I spent a few days last week with her and her mind is very unstable right now. If you have dealt with something like this, you know questions will come.

Where is God when bad things happen? Why doesn't He intervene? I had an opportunity to read Max Lucado's book For The Tough Times this week. It really spoke to me. It is a small gift book and only took about an hour to read. This makes it prefect to give someone that you know is dealing with life-changing situations.

One of the things he says that really encouraged me and challenged me to think was the following:

We're thinking, Preserve the body; He's thinking, Save the soul.

The truth is that eternity is so much longer and more important than the present. As much as I would love to hold on to my sister, she is in torment. I actively believe in His power to heal. But I am much more concerned about her place in eternity.

The book ends with an awesome prayer titled Do It Again, Lord

I am sending the book to my sister and buying another copy for my mother. As a pastor's wife, there are many times there is no 'right thing' to say to bring comfort to someone. I think this gift book would be awesome to give in those situations.

Urgent Prayer Request!

Sunday Afternoon Update:
Just got back from my sister's house. I went with her to the doctors Friday and they are aggressively treating her donor host disease with the belief it will allow her lungs and other organs to heal. I got a chance to minister to her and some direction from God in how best to do that now. Thank you all for your prayers!

I am asking everyone who reads this blog to pray for my sister, Rachel Batson. She is 39 years old and has a aplastic anemia. This is a blood disorder in which the body does not reproduce blood as it should. Rachel had a bone marrow transplant last year but has since developed graft versus host disease. The disease is in the organs of her body. This is causing the organs to shut down. She especially needs prayer for her lungs. The doctors at Vanderbilt Hospital are saying she only has 2-3 months to live with her lungs as they are.

Please pray for:

a healing in her body
total commitment to Jesus Christ
her husband-Billy
her son-Trevor
peace
strength for me as I minister to her
my parents and other family members
safety as I travel

My First Book Review-Audio New Testament for Youth

We spent 4 months on the road preaching when my boys were young. Life was challenging and sibling rivalry did not make for relaxing trips! Adventures in Odyssey were a key to our sanity during that time! We listened to the stories on CD over and over as we drove. Maybe as a result of those memories, my teenagers love to listen to music and the radio when they go to bed at night.

Today I am reviewing a new Thomas Nelson product made especially for youth. These are a set of 3 MP3 CDS that present the complete New Testament in audio theatre. This product is called The Word of Promise Next Generation New Testament.

What a great way to get the Word of God into your spirit! The cast are youth and the voice inflections are superb. These CDs are perfect for my 13 year old to listen to at night. They would also be great in the car when you want to spend feeding your spirit. Another thought I had was that they would be great for Bible Quizzers.

Check this out if you are looking for a way to influence your teenagers.

God's time is the right time!

This morning I got up ready for my new healthy lifestyle! I drank a big glass of water and took my vitamin, exercised, walked the dog and made a healthy breakfast. As I sat down to eat, a wave of nausea came over me and I began to shake and sweat.

After I threw my healthy breakfast in the trash, I realized what had happened: I had taken my vitamin on an empty stomach. No, it didn't make me feel better this morning, but hopefully I won't make that mistake again.

Now for the spiritual application.... There is an order for what God has for our lives just as there is an order for taking things like vitamins. This morning, I got ahead of myself. I was so excited about my goal to get healthy that I didn't take the time to remember the basics I already knew.

God has perfect timing. I look forward in faith to what He has promised me. I believe with everything in me that this is the year I will begin to see His promises and plans for me fulfilled. He is lining everything up in my life and I am so excited!!! If I am not careful I can jump ahead of Him. I can forget the daily things I must do, the lessons He has already taught me. It is called daily obedience. Believe me, I do NOT want to have to walk through those lessons again! I want to remember to shut my mouth when He tells me too (learned that lesson well). I want to be quick to speak when He directs me to (remember that lesson?).

So I am telling myself to slow down and pay careful attention to what I know to do. Someone said in church last night "I was not doing anything wrong last year, but I wasn't doing the things I knew I should be doing." The verse immediately came to my mind: He that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17.

I am so ready to go to a higher place in Him. I am going to keep my eyes on the prize and my focus on the order He has set in my life.

Be careful who you tell your dreams to!

I went with my son recently to see a production of Joseph and the Amazing Coat at a local community college. As I sat in the dark theater and watched the young men in the production, one of the lessons in the first part of the story hit me fresh and clear.

Joseph told his dream to the wrong people at the wrong time.

In his naivity, he thought his brothers would rejoice with him when he shared his dreams with them. Instead, it caused their jealous to turn to hatred of him and the favor of the father on his life.

Many times in my own life, I have been too quick to share what God is showing me about the future with others. The truth is not everyone is called to share your dreams. There are circumstances and life issues people deal with that get in the way of their ability to 'rejoice with those who rejoice'. Just because you are there for other people does not mean they are capable of being there for you.

Wisdom teaches us to wait and be careful about our conversation and 'the pearls of our hearts'. I would even tell you to guard your dream and thus protect the words being spoken over it. I want life spoken into my life and future. God is always faithful to raise up armor bearers and encouragers to share in what He wants to bring to pass in your life.

We must also wait for His timing. Sometimes in our own personalities, we run ahead of His timing and that is why we have a tendency to tell the wrong people what He is speaking to us. But His timing is perfect and when we wait for Him to open the doors and make the way clear we will see the people He has already put in position to be a part of the fulfillment of the vision He had given.

Christmas Blessings

As we prepare for this year to draw to a close, I can't help but wonder what the new year will bring. So many things are up in the air around us, the war, the economy, changes in government. It seems so much is changing. I was on the way to our Christmas eve service at church with my boys and we we were talking about how life had changed for us since Christmas of last year.

We are in a new church and new community. This means we live in a new parsonage, which I will take the time to say I absolutely love. I feel so blessed in my home every day. There is room for everyone to spread out and I got to choose the colors and many other aspects I am thankful for.

Our new church family is absolutely great. We have some people God has placed there that are irreplaceable and treat us like gold. I thank God for them every day. I also thank God for a church that truly has a heart for the community that surrounds it. God is leading people with a heart like ours to World Harvest and we are trusting Him to do so this coming year. I am thankful my husband is able to be who God has called him to be here and has armor bearers and staff to support his vision. We know we are right where God wants us to be.

I also thank God for my children. They are such a blessing to me right now. I will be honest: Before we moved I was very concerned about their spiritual lives. We were pastoring a small church in a small community. We loved our church family there, but needed a different thing for our children. They needed to see men and other teenagers really serving God. I know as Christian parents our greatest responsibility is to pray for our children, but I also believe we should make every opportunity for them to experience and see the presence and glory of God.

This was my prayer during the holidays last year and I can honestly say that is where God has placed us now. I know that the next year will bring even more changes in their lives, but to see them loving and serving God and talking about their futures in the ministry gives me great hope that they are becoming the men of God we have prayed for all their lives!

I am so thankful to be back in college. I have really struggled with this, as I also love the church and have been an active leader in every church we have pastored. I do know that God has given me this season and it is a part of His plan for my life. I have prayed for His peace and am embracing where He is guiding me. Juggling both of these desires with my devotion to my family will be interesting this next year!

The law of attraction

I do not attract who I want to be, but who I am becoming.

As a pastor's wife assimilating to a new church, I am very aware of the law of attraction. I strongly believe that God wants us to build relationships in our lives. We were created for fellowship. Genesis tells us it is not good for man to be alone. How much more so for a woman, who was created to MEET man's need for fellowship.

Bear ye one anothers burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2. One of my daily prayers is that God will raise up a team of women around me that are real and personal. It is time we get beyond the facade of we we 'think' we should be and acknowledge the awesome women we are! Each of us has struggles and burdens, but as iron sharpens iron, so one man shineth the countenance of another.

I want to sharpen others. I want and need a group of women that believe in who I am in Christ and want to see me get to where God is taking me. I desire to watch and be a part of the growth in their lives. God is so awesome! I am thanking Him for the women he has and is placing in my life right now! May we be a sweet aroma to others to attract them to Him!

Know Your Triggers!

Negative people: Do you know someone who just drags you down? Who is it that can quickly cause you to become negative? You can be in a good mood and feel on top of the world. You can have peace about a situation in your life, and then you talk to the wrong person.

Crash! It all comes down around you. Suddenly you are in a bad mood, mad at the world, questioning the will of God, or even your walk with God. All because you opened your mouth or your heart to the wrong person.

When I think about this, I look at the life of Joseph. God had chosen Joseph before he was even born and gave him dreams about his future. Joseph told the wrong people at the wrong time. His brothers couldn't handle the thought of his dreams coming true because they were not in his corner or on his team.

How often do we do this? God begins to speak to us and confirm His will for our lives and we tell the wrong people. Of course they can't affirm us in our dream! They don't see us as God sees us. Take it from me, I have learned this the hard way. Avoid this trigger!

No, you can't always avoid this person. For whatever reason, God has put them in your life. But do yourself and your walk with God a favor and do not share your dreams with them. Recognize that they are unable to be happy for you, cheer you on, or believe in your dream.

Release that expectation from that relationship. Acknowledge they are a negative trigger in your life and guard your heart and spirit from receiving the negativity they share. Choose carefully what you share with that person. Speak positive things that are not controversial. Save youe energy for relationships that feed you and help you grow. KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS!

The gifts God has given us: Hospitality

I went to our WM Christmas party last night. My single friend who was the hostess told me last week she wanted to be Mrs. Claus. I laughed it off at the time, but after being in her home last night, I believe her! It was so beautifully decorated for Christmas. There was a fire in the fireplace and a tree in each room. Beautiful nativity scenes, candles and other Christmas decor warmed the home. Our host was gracious, and I felt welcomed and valued as a guest. Hospitality at its warmest was evident in her home and manner. I came home last night wishing I had planned more holiday gatherings in my own home during this season.

I have a sister that gets paid to decorate other peoples homes, but I somehow missed the gene for interior design that God was supposed to give me. I was not raised in a home that served formal meals so I never learned how to 'entertain' in a way that would impress my guests. Shall I keep giving you a list of all of my excuses?

In spite of all of my excuses and my genuine feelings of inadequecy, God has been teaching me to be hospitable. In our society, we take the gift of hospitality to mean the ability to impress. This is so limiting because it is putting a list of ifs in front of having people in our home. If my home was big enough, if I had the time to clean it, if I had time to make a fancy dinner. None of these things has anything to do with hospitality. Hospitality is defined as kindness in welcoming guests and strangers. This I CAN do.

In order to practice hospitality, I have to let go of my own need to be seen as perfect. I must surrender my expectations on myself and see it as unimportant. A big part of this is seeing that other person and getting to know them or just blessing them as our main goal.

Are you an investor or a consumer?

A pastor friend of mine received a phone call recently from another pastor. The other man pastors a large church about an hour away from him. He had heard good things about my friends church and was calling him with an unusual request. You see, he had about 10 families from my friends community that were travelling to his church on Sunday morning for services. They were not involved in extra activities, ministries or additional services because of the distance. Their pastor wanted to see about getting them plugged in at a church in their community for their own spiritual health.

First, let me give kudos to this guy. Wow! This is SO unusual for a pastor to do. I applaud him for really caring about the spiritual health of his people.

Secondly, let me update you that in the three months since this conversation took place, not one of the families has taken their pastor up on his recommendation to them.

While I don't pretend to know all the reasons, I have a theory. my theory is based on the periods of time I have not been in active ministry, as well as the counseling, coaching and watching I do as a pastor's wife. Want to hear it? Sure you do!

They are consumers. They like the feeling of having a choice. They can decide each Sunday morning whether they feel like going to church or have something else they would rather do. They live too far away to be 'checked up on'. They live to far away to be expected to come to Sunday school or Wed. night Bible study. No one expects them to come to the midweek prayer meetings or work in the nursery. They are approaching church much like a customer walking into McDonalds. What is on the menu today?

Now compare that to an investor. An investor might live ten minutes or an hour away from the church but they are still a committed part of that body. He shows up for Sunday school because he believes it offers him something worth committing to. She can be counted on when everyone has to pull together for an outreach in the church. They have made the choice to invest their lives into that church; and the difference shows.

Someone once said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well." I think it is time we transfer our investment mentality into the church. I am investing in my local church. It pays rich dividends. My children are welcomed and ministered to there. If I need prayer, I will find it there. If there is a crisis in my home, my church family will be there. There is safety and refuge within its walls.

Life Choices

One fine Sunday morning, a man was walking with his family to church when he heard an awful commotion coming from behind the church. He sent his family on it and went to see what was going on. To his surprise, he saw the devil sitting on the ground moaning and crying something awful. "What in the world is wrong with you?" he asked the devil. "You won't believe what they're blaming me for in there." was his answer.

Now, I know this story has A LOT of faulty theology but stay with me as I make my point! There are so many things in our life that we deal with that are a result of our own bad choices. When you think about the fact that every one of us is allowed to make our own choices in life, it is mindboggling. I know sometimes it seems it would be easier if we could force those that we care about to make good choices. It is so hard to see people that we love hitting their heads against a brick wall over and over again wondering why the wall won't move, but we can't change their stubbornness....

Just think how God must feel about us sometimes? He shows us clearly what we need to do to make it through all the junk life throws our way, yet many times we insist on doing it on our own anyway. Then we whine and cry about how unfair life is. I think about one of my favorite songs "I went to the enemy's camp and took back what he stole from me." the truth of that song is that we surrendered many of those things to the devil willingly and our struggle is in getting them back from him!

Yup, life is 'unfair' and sometimes it is a mess, but the only way I make it through is by trusting in the One who created life and knew me before I was born. Surrendering to Him is the only way I keep going forward and choosing to believe He loves me and knows the plans He has for me. That is what keeps me from giving up.

The ultimate choices in life aren't really about life at all.. they are about eternity.

I honor you as the Lord of my life.

I surrender all areas of my life to You.

I ask that you fill me with your Spirit so that everything I do today might
glorify You.

I trust You with my life, recognizing that You hold my future in the palm of Your hand.

I believe that You have good plans for me and that they WILL come to pass.

Show me what You would have me to do to prepare for that which You have called me to do.

I honor and exalt You high above all else.
